Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride (2003)

Jesus Morales, 56, of Woodburn, Oregon rallies with workers of Smith Processing in Weston, Oregon.

Morales, worked in the fields of Guadalajara, Mexico from the age of five. (His mother left the family for America when he was 6 months old). He never received a formal education because he was always working. He moved to Oregon with his wife in 1978, still with no education, and they brought their children from Mexico in 1980. He became a US citizen in 1993 and taught himself to read and write.

Morales believes it is important to learn for the future. "If I can make it, you can make it," he says.
